Dan zit je opeens in de radio uitzending van Menno Barreveld op Q - music.
Elk jaar spreken Melissa Hoogendoorn, vriendin en collega dierenfotograaf, en ik af. Een paar dagen kletsen, brainstormen voor onze bedrijven, fotograferen en gezellig op pad. Vorig jaar waren we in Duitsland. Dit jaar spraken we af in Denemarken. We huurden een huisje in het midden van Jutland. Een uur van de plek waar Melissa nu woont. Zo kon Melissa me haar eigen stekje en paard laten zien en konden we elkaar in actie kunnen fotograferen en andere leuke sessies doen. Daarnaast was het ook leuk om de omgeving te verkennen en de toerist uit te hangen. Deense specialiteiten (Stjarneskud, chocolade schildpadden en Flødeboller zijn nu favoriet) te eten en in de avond te ontspannen of gezellig een spelletje Hitster of Patchwork te spelen

De eerste sessie begon gelijk goed, IJslandse paarden in de sneeuw op een mooie rustige locatie in de natuur fotograferen. Dat stond al jaren op mijn lijstje. Bij Grethe mochten we haar op haar prachtige plek in haar achtertuin haar kudde IJslandse paarden fotograferen. Fantastisch.

Iedere fotograaf heeft zijn eigen stijl en soort sessie waar voor je bij hem/haar moet zijn. Melissa is in haar element als ze grote paarden mag fotograferen. Voor ons als fotografen is het fijn als we kunnen laten zien hoe het eruit ziet als we aan het werk zijn. Daarom ging ik met Melissa mee naar een sessie om haar in actie te fotograferen terwijl zij een fotosessie had met Natasja en haar prachtige Friese paard..

Voor mij is dit natuurlijk ook het geval. Dus fotografeerde Melissa mij terwijl ik de IJslandse honden van Tove aan het fotograferen was.
IJslandse honden fotograferen aan de kust in Noordoost Jutland, Denemarken
Naast IJslandse paarden vind ik honden in actie fotograferen echt een feest om te doen. Helemaal als het dan ook nog IJslandse honden zijn. Ik probeer ook als ik in het buitenland ben op pad te gaan voor mijn eigen IJslandse honden project en zo IJslandse honden te verzamelen. Fotosessies voor mijn projecten zijn heerlijk voor mij om zonder verplichtingen en tijdsdruk om gewoon lekker te creëren, nieuwe ideeen uit te proberen en te genieten van mijn favoriete dierenrassen.
Op deze gave locatie aan de Noordoost kust van Jutland in Denemarken, mocht ik 3 enthousiaste IJslandse honden in de sneeuw fotograferen. De kleuren van de vachten van de honden paste prachtig bij de kleuren van natuur. Ik kon mijn geluk niet op.
Hoe tof is het om op zo’n locatie IJslandse honden te mogen fotograferen?!
Tove kwam met haar drie fantastische fotogenieke, blije IJslandse dames. Ísa-Soley, Gleði en Sía naar deze prachtige locatie bij Dokkedal aan de Noordoost kust van Jutland. Tusind tak Tove!

Terwijl naast mij het ijs rond dreef in het water mocht ik op het strand van eiland Fur in Denemarken vriendin en collega dierenfotograaf, Melissa Hoogendoorn en haar IJslander, Kolfaxi frá Álfholum fotograferen. Als fotograaf houden we van foto’s en wil je altijd heel graag toffe foto’s met je eigen dieren, maar dat is toch altijd weer moeilijk om voor elkaar te krijgen. Erg leuk om nu, na altijd samen op pad te gaan voor fotosessies van anderen mensen, Melissa haar plek te kunnen zien en ook een keer haar met haar eigen paard in actie te zien en mogen fotograferen.
Aan het einde van de fotosessie nog even gezellig met zijn drieën op de foto. Melissa, haar Kolfaxi en ik. Ik zie er aan het einde van de sessie niet uit. Mijn schoenen zijn volgelopen met water, mijn haar in de war en mijn kleding zit onder de modder. Maar wat een toffe fotosessie. De modellen deden het super, de locatie was top.
IJslandse paarden en IJslandse honden als modellen voor mijn project
Heb jij ook een IJslandse paardenkudde of een drachtige merrie op een prachtige locatie in de natuur, of heb je IJslandse honden?
Ik wil graag een database voor mezelf creëren voor als ik op reis ga en wil fotograferen voor mijn project. Daarom ga ik op pad om voor mezelf lekker te spelen, te creëren en nieuwe ideeën uit te werken zonder druk.
Ik wil een database met IJslandse paarden en honden, zodat ik wanneer ik mijn reis ga plannen, een lijst heb van mogelijke modellen. Niet alleen in Nederland, maar ook in het buitenland, zoals Engeland, Schotland, Wales, IJsland, België, Duitsland, Luxemburg, Denemarken, Noorwegen en Zweden.
Ik ben bezig met plannen voor Engeland, Wales en Schotland in 2025. Daarnaast wil ik terug naar IJsland voor een rondreis – IJslandse paarden en honden 2025/2026.

Suddenly, you find yourself live on the Menno Barreveld radio show on Q-Music!
Every year, my friend and fellow animal photographer, Melissa Hoogendoorn, and I plan a catch-up. A few days filled with chatting, brainstorming for our businesses, photography, and just enjoying each other’s company. Last year, we met in Germany, but this time we decided on a cozy getaway in Denmark. We rented a little house in the heart of Jutland, just an hour away from Melissa's new home. This way, Melissa could show me her favorite spot and her horse, and we could photograph each other in action while having fun photo sessions. Plus, we got to explore the area like tourists, savoring Danish specialties (Stjerneskud, chocolate turtles, and Flødeboller have quickly become favorites), and unwinding in the evenings with some fun games like Hitster or Patchwork.

We kicked off our first photo session on a high note, capturing stunning Icelandic horses in the snow at a peaceful, picturesque location in nature—something that had been on my bucket list for years. We were lucky enough to photograph Grethe and her gorgeous herd of Icelandic horses in her beautiful backyard. Absolutely fantastic!

Behind the Scenes: Melissa the Horse Photographer in Action
Every photographer has their own unique style and type of session that they excel at. Melissa truly comes alive when she's photographing majestic horses. For us as photographers, it’s always fun to show what it looks like when we're hard at work. So, I tagged along with Melissa to document her in action during a session with Natasja and her stunning Friesian horse.

Of course, it was the same for me! Melissa snapped some great shots while I was photographing Tove’s Icelandic dogs.
Photographing Icelandic Dogs on the Coast of Northeastern Jutland, Denmark
Besides Icelandic horses, photographing dogs in action is a real joy for me. Especially when they happen to be Icelandic dogs! Whenever I’m abroad, I make it a point to go out for my own Icelandic dog project, gathering these lovely pooches. These sessions are pure bliss, allowing me to create freely, try out new ideas, and enjoy my favorite breeds without any obligations or time pressure.
At this amazing location along the northeastern coast of Jutland, I had the pleasure of photographing three enthusiastic Icelandic dogs in the snow. The colors of their coats were a perfect match for the beautiful nature surrounding us. I was on cloud nine!

Meanwhile, as the ice drifted alongside me, I had the chance to photograph my friend and fellow animal photographer, Melissa Hoogendoorn, with her Icelandic horse Kolfaxi frá Álfholum on the beach of Fur Island, Denmark. As photographers, we love capturing beautiful moments, and it's always a thrill to snag great shots with our own animals, though it can be a challenge. It was such a joy to finally see Melissa's world and photograph her in action with her own horse after years of shooting sessions for others!
At the end of the photo session, we snapped a fun shot together—Melissa, her Kolfaxi, and me. I may not have looked my best; my shoes were soaked, my hair a mess, and my clothes covered in mud. But what an incredible photo session it was! The models were fantastic, and the location was top-notch.
Icelandic Horses and Dogs as Models for My Project
Do you have a herd of Icelandic horses or a beautiful pregnant mare in a stunning natural setting, or perhaps you have Icelandic dogs?
I’m looking to create a database for myself to use when I travel and want to take photos for my project. So, I’m setting out to have some fun, get creative, and develop new ideas without any pressure.
I want a database filled with Icelandic horses and dogs, so I’ll have a list of potential models when planning my trips. Not just in the Netherlands, but also abroad, such as in England, Scotland, Wales, Iceland, Belgium, Germany, Luxembourg, Denmark, Norway, and Sweden.
I’m currently making plans for England, Wales, and Scotland in 2025. Plus, I want to return to Iceland for a road trip – Icelandic horses and dogs in 2025/2026.
